The treatment for the anterior bounded saddle because of missing teeth presents several challenges, primarily that of aesthetics. The choice of treatment depends on the position of the saddle, its size, the amount of available alveolar bone support, the health of the abutment teeth, and the patient’s wishes. With regard to the use of a removable partial denture (RPD), while acknowledging the significant importance of aesthetics, unless the presence of adequate retention of the prosthesis is ensured, the appearance of the teeth alone will not guarantee its acceptability. This article highlights techniques that are available to provide adequate retention which will, in turn, give a patient confidence with the use of their denture. The techniques described are dependent on laboratory technical knowledge and skills, and on the ability of the patient to manipulate the appliance.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of wearing removable partial dentures on the periodontal health of abutments and find outtheage and gender association. Study design: Descriptive case series. Place and duration: Prosthodontic department of Lahore Medical and Dental College Lahore, from15th January till 15thJuly 2023. Methodology: A total of 70 patients of both genders participated in the study. Removable dentures were delivered to the patients and they were recalled after one month of denture insertion to evaluate the abutment health, gingival recession was checked in terms of its presence or absence, plaque and gingival health index assessment were done using Loe and Silness index. Tooth mobility was checked by using Millar’s classification. Mean and SD was computed for quantitative data. Age and gender correlation was assessed using Pearson Chi -square test. Significant level was set to p<0.05. Results: A total 41.4%males and 58.6% females were selected. A total of 68.6% maxillary partial dentures whereas 31.4% mandibular partial dentures were inserted. Gingival health index showed maximum patients with good health 57.1%. Dental plaque index of maximum patients 77.1% fell under zero score. Tooth mobility score of zero was frequently found in abutments 78.6%. Gingival recession around the abutments after one month of denture insertion was found in 15.7%whereas 84.3% abutments remained healthy. Association of Gingival index, plaque index, tooth mobility and gingival recession with gender did not show statistical significance however with respect to age significant results were obtained. Tooth mobility had no association with age. Conclusion: Removable partial dentures use does not disturb the periodontal health of abutments if well fabricated dentures are provided and good oral hygiene maintenance protocolsare followed. Patients’ education regarding denture use along with regular recall visits are of utmost importance. The aims of this study were to, (a) Assess the level of skill acquired for designing removable partial dentures through two teaching methods individually, on two courses of dental graduates. (b) Compare the level of skill of dental graduates acquired through two teaching methods for designing removable partial dentures for diverse clinical situations. Materials and METHODOLOGY: This quasi-experimental study comprised of application of two interactive teaching methods over two courses of Dental students over a period of three years. Course I, (n=113) was assessed with a brainstorming session without a prior formal lecture. Course II (n=102) was exposed to an interactive lecture followed by a formative assessment of RPD deigning. Each participant was asked to design a removable partial denture for a clinical scenario. Assessment was based on specific satisfaction criteria. Data was analyzed descriptively and compared with student's t test. RESULTS: Out of all participants, 70 % of participants in course I and 63% percent from course II showed partial satisfaction. 8-15 % were able to achieve complete satisfactory scores. On comparison of two courses, mean total score in course I was 3.31 ± 1.21 and in course II mean total score was 3 ± 1.30, thus, p-value was 0.072, which was statistically insignificant. CONCLUSION: The level of skill acquired for designing a removable partial denture through two interactive teaching methods was only partially satisfactory for most participants of both courses. The level of skill acquired from brainstorming was comparable to the skill acquired from an interactive lecture. The difference of assessment scores in both scenarios was not statistically significant.
