The impact of research on hospital costs of care: an empirical study

Abstract: The goal of this study was to examine the impact of research activities on hospital costs and lengths of stay in French public hospitals. Our data consist of a random sample of 30000 inpatient stays in 38 hospitals that were extracted from the French Hospital Cost Survey database. Hospital characteristics were added using data from a French national survey and performing a bibliometric study. This is a retrospective study of hospitalizations. We used multilevel modelling. We considered separate models to expla… Show more

“…There is a large body of literature on hospital cost functions and productivity that began in the 1960s. Recent studies in this sector have focused on specific aspects, such as the influence of research activity on hospital costs and the length of stay (Bonastre et al, 2011;Farsi and Filippini, 2008). Additionally, countries increasingly maintain their own hospital cost panels to facilitate the country-specific design of prospective payment systems .…”

“…The scientometric analyses based on the WoS and WOK database platforms are among the widely used tools allowing assessment of the performance of individuals, institutions, countries, or the whole research areas (Bonastre, le Vaillant, & de Pouvourville, ; Derrick, Sturk, Haynes, Chapman, & Hall, ; Grauwin & Jensen, ; Heerspink et al., ; Hamilton, ; Zheng, Yuan, Pan, & Zhao, ). Although these platforms belong to the largest available data sources in science, their use is limited to internationally important topics.…”

“…We used the balance between residents and senior consultants (resident fraction) to examine this factor. As a proxy for research, for each year examined, we calculated the publication score (Bonastre, le Vaillant, & de Pouvourville, 2011;Linna, Hakkinen, & Linnakko, 1998;Medin et al, 2011), which is a bibliometric measure taking into account the impact-weighted number of journal articles and the number of doctoral theses completed each year. Such data were only available for 2003-2013 and were extrapolated using linear regression for 2001 and 2002 for use in the multivariate analyses.…”
