The Impact of Risk Factors on Treatment Outcomes of Nosocomial Pneumonia Due to Gram-Negative Bacteria in the Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: Introduction: Nosocomial pneumonia is a common infection associated with high mortality in hospitalized patients. Nosocomial pneumonia, caused by gram-negative bacteria, often occurs in the elderly and patients with comorbid diseases. Methods: Original research using a prospective cross-sectional design was conducted on 281 patients in an intensive care unit setting with nosocomial pneumonia between July 2015 and July 2019. For each nosocomial pneumonia case, data regarding comorbidities, risk factors, patient… Show more

“…This study recorded a majority of male patients (98.8%), showing that COPD predominates in men; this finding is similar to that of Nguyen CT's study, the rate of which for males is 88.4% [15]. The average age of the COPD patients was 66.71 ± 7.93, which is comparable to Kraen M's research with an average age of 66.0 ± 6.2 [16] and similar to another study in Can Tho [17]. As a result, our anthropometric epidemiological study's results are consistent with the characteristics of COPD, which usually occurs in men with an average age of 60 years or more.…”

“…Nosocomial pneumonia, including hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU) [ 1 , 2 ]. Among the various pathogens that cause nosocomial pneumonia, a focus on carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB), especially CR- Acinetobacter baumannii complex (CRAB), CR- Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), and CR- Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) , is motivated by the limited number of treatment choices available and poor treatment outcomes [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…Comorbid illnesses were identified by the Charlson comorbidity index and using ICD-10 cm codes [15]. The method to calculate the CCI score has already been mentioned elsewhere [14,15]. The diagnosis of MRS pneumonia was made based on clinical characteristics, laboratory testing, imaging findings, microbiological tests, and treatment outcomes.…”
