The Impact of SARS-CoV-2 Infection on Heart Rate Variability: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies with Control Groups

Abstract: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction can arise after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and heart rate variability (HRV) tests can assess its integrity. This review investigated the relationship between the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on HRV parameters. Comprehensive searches were conducted in four electronic databases. Observational studies with a control group reporting the direct impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the HRV parameters in July 2022 were included. A t… Show more

“…There were previous systematic reviews of the associations of HRV parameters with the COVID-19 vaccination [ 66 ] and with the acute COVID-19 infection [ 28 , 51 ]. To our knowledge, this review is the first comprehensive review of the long-term effects of COVID-19 based on HRV parameters.…”

“…Although other underlying mechanisms of long COVID include immune dysregulation, gut microbiota imbalance, and autoimmunity, ANS dysfunction is still considered a promising therapeutic target for this clinical condition [ 27 ]. Although there has been a recent systematic review investigating changes in HRV parameters in individuals currently positive for SARS-CoV-2 [ 28 ], there has been no attempt to comprehensively investigate the relationship between HRV parameters and the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including long COVID.…”

“…Дослідження ВСР при COVID-19 проводили як серед госпіталізованих пацієнтів, так і в амбулаторних умовах [26,27,28]. Зокрема Kaliyaperumal et al [28] порівнювали показники ВСР у пацієнтів з COVID-19 з такими у здорових осіб.…”

“…HRV has been shown to be useful in the detection and evaluation of palpitations in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and fibromyalgia (11,12). However, there is limited research on the correlation between HRV and palpitations in individuals with long COVID (13). This study aims to analyze the relationship between palpitation symptoms and HRV parameters in female patients with long COVID to gain a better understanding of the autonomic mechanism behind these symptoms.…”
