The impact of COVID‐19 on organ donation and transplantation in the UK: lessons learned from the first year of the pandemic

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on UK deceased organ donation and transplantation activity. We used national audit data from NHS Blood and Transplant to explore in detail the effects of the pandemic in comparison with 12 months pre-pandemic, and to consider the impact of the mitigating strategies and challenges placed on ICU by `waves´of patients with COVID-19. Between 11 March 2020 and 10 March 2021, referrals to NHS Blood and Transplant of potential organ donors were initially inversely related to t… Show more

“…A COVID-19 infection as a reason against donation was less frequent in 2022, likely because at the end of April 2022, the German Medical Association no longer stated a COVID-19 infection as an absolute contraindication for an organ donation ( 41 ). Additionally, vaccination and protection strategies supported to minimize the effect of COVID-19 on transplantation activities ( 10 ), and resilience throughout the entire ICU, organ donation and transplantation services was improved ( 42 ).…”

“…Given the dramatic and sustained reduction in deceased organ donation in the United Kingdom caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 3,10 greater recognition and response to ICU staff attitudes to organ donation is essential. The timing of our surveys was such that ICU staff attitudes after the pandemic were not captured within our data, but this would be a key area of ongoing research both locally and in the wider intensive care community.…”
