The Impact of Shift-Work and Night Shift-Work on Thyroid: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Thyroid hormones are regulated by the pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), whose secretion presents a circadian rhythmicity. Indeed, it is conceivable that shift- and night shift-work, affecting sleep-wake rhythms, may impact thyroid functionality. Therefore, the aim of the present review was to provide an overview on the association between shift- and night shift-work and thyroid hormonal changes and disease development. A systematic review of studies available in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Scienc… Show more

“…In fact, sleep seems to exert an inhibitory effect on nocturnal TSH secretion: patients subjected to sleep deprivation do not show a significant decrease in TSH concentrations [ 30 , 35 , 36 ]. The inhibiting effect of sleep on TSH secretion has further been confirmed by the finding of increased nocturnal TSH levels in patients who carry out night-shift work [ 38 ] ( Figure 4 ).…”

“…A higher prevalence of hyperthyrotropinemia and more adverse effects of hyperthyrotropinemia on lipid metabolism in females than in males were reported [38]. Furthermore, serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were reported to be signi cantly higher in night-shift workers than in day-shift workers, suggesting an association between serum TSH levels and work style [39]. The relationship between sleep duration and abnormal lipid metabolism in females needs to be further investigated.…”

“…These include evening shift, night shift, graveyard shift, rotational shift, etc. (Costa 2003;Leso et al 2020;Rosa and Colligan 1997;Straif et al 2007). More than one of five shift workers suffered from insomnia (Drake et al 2004;Pepin et al 2018), and one of ten suffered from shift work sleep disorder (Drake et al 2004).…”

“…We defined shift work as "work beyond regular working daytime hours", including evening shift, night shift, fixed shift, on-call shift or rotating shift (Costa 2003;Leso et al 2020;Rosa and Colligan 1997;Straif et al 2007).…”
