The impact of short-wave effects on deterioration of track geometry

Abstract: Short wavelength rail defects or short-wave effects of rail have a significant influence on the system behaviour of railways. The influence of additional dynamic loads due to short-wave effects on component wear and the general quality behaviour of track is shown by several research papers. However, the described effect cannot yet be quantified comprehensively. This paper attempts to fill this gap. With the help of extensive data analysis, we can show that short-wave effects lead to a track geometry that is up… Show more

“…Concluding the description of rail surface fatigue, it should be mentioned here that the interactions of damage mechanisms in the railway system are not covered in this TDM. Even though it has already been shown, e.g., by Loidolt et al [62], that spots of discontinuity on the rail surface lead to a worse track quality (up to 50% worse on average), the interaction between damage mechanisms is very challenging for TDM.…”

“…These effects lead to dynamic load effects and thus accelerate wear of components. We have recently published details on these interrelationships in [22]. Typical places where short-wave irregularities occur are welds, isolated rail joints and rail defects.…”

“…Insulated rail joints and welding joints also contribute significantly to vehicle excitation. These dynamic forces lead to increased wear of other components and should therefore be replaced before significant damage occurs at the system level [22][23][24][25].…”
