The Impact of Tape Sealing Face Masks on Visual Field Scores in the Era of COVID-19: A Randomized Cross-over Study

Abstract: Precis: Tape sealing of the face mask can prevent fogging artifacts of visual field testing. Here, we demonstrate that tape sealing can improve visual field scores even when fogging artifacts are not obvious. Purpose:The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that visual field scores improve when the face masks are taped to prevent fogging artifacts. Methods: A Single-center, randomized 2×2 cross-over study. Twenty-six visual fields of 13 patients of the glaucoma outpatient clinic were included. Patients were… Show more

“…Although various risk factors for glaucoma development have been identified [1][2][3], intraocular pressure remains the only modifiable one [4]. While our current armamentarium for detecting glaucoma and glaucomatous progression has known limitations [5], emerging technologies may facilitate earlier diagnosis [6]. On the one hand, this is crucial for an effective glaucoma treatment; on the other, early treatment in eyes with mild glaucoma highlights the necessity to evaluate options carefully to maintain the old principle "primum non nocere".…”

“…Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized that telemedicine for detecting and following glaucoma could be particularly useful to facilitate ophthalmic care without in-person examinations, as well as the need for protecting both patients and healthcare professionals, with barriers and continuous cleaning of instruments, the usefulness of imaging devices [ 12 , 13 ], and the difficulties of performing functional tests while wearing a face mask [ 14 ].…”
