Background The digital transformation of healthcare enables new ways of working in cancer care directing attention on the digital skills of healthcare professionals. This systematic review aims to identify existing evidence about digital skills among health care professionals in cancer care to identify the needs for future education and research. Methods Database searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane and ERIC to identify studies until March 2023. The inclusion criteria were digital skills of health care professionals in cancer care as described by themselves, other health care professionals, patients or significant others. The CASP tool was used for quality assessment of the studies. Data was analysed following inductive content analysis. Results The search produced 4563 records, of which 24 studies were included (12 qualitative, 10 quantitative, 1 mixed methods design and 1 strategy paper). Four main categories were identified describing HCPs’ required skills, existing skills and development areas of digital skills in cancer care: Skills for information technology, Skills for ethical practice, Skills for creating a human-oriented relationship and Skills for digital education and support. In development areas, one more main category, Skills for implementing digital health, was identified. Conclusion The digital skills of health care professionals in cancer care are multifaceted and fundamental for quality cancer care. The skills need to be assessed to provide education based on actual learning needs. The review findings can be used for education and research in this field.

Introduction: Although virtual care (VC) has become an integral part of oncology care and healthcare delivery, clinicians’ perspectives on and satisfaction with this modality are not well understood. Methods: Using a National Network Forum framework and expert panel review, we developed a questionnaire to measure oncologists’ satisfaction with VC. The questionnaire was distributed to Canadian oncologists through medical society email lists (n = 1541). We used a 5-point Likert scale to capture their responses, which included strongly disagree (1), disagree (2), undecided (3), agree (4), and strongly agree (5). Results: A total of 61 oncologists and/or oncology trainees, of 768 (7.9%) who opened their email, completed questionnaires between October 2022 and January 2023. Every questionnaire item had a response rate greater than 98%. Seventy-two percent of the respondents were satisfied with VC. Oncologists who were less comfortable with technology were more likely to report lower levels of satisfaction (p < 0.001, Wilcoxon rank-sum). The questionnaire items that received the highest levels of agreement were related to VC reducing costs and improving access for patients and concerns about missing a diagnosis and assessing patients’ functional status. The questionnaire items that received the greatest disagreement were related to VC improving access for patients with language barriers, VC being associated with time-savings for clinicians, improvements in clinical efficacy, and more readily available lab tests. Conclusions: Most of the oncologists surveyed are satisfied with VC; however, there are some concerns with VC that need to be addressed. Future research on optimizing VC should address clinicians’ concerns, in addition to addressing the patient experience.

The Evolving Role of the Oncology Nurse in the United States of America—A Survey Exploring Their Perspective

Background: The role of the oncology nurse has evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic to continuously meet patient needs, resulting in an increased virtual presence. However, there is little information about whether these roles have continued since the pandemic and how it is affecting nurses. Methods: The aim of this study, conducted via an electronic survey questionnaire, was to examine the perspective of oncology nurses in the United States of America regarding how their role has changed, the adaptation to telehealth, challenges, and needs. Results: Over 5 months, 197 respondents from 17 different states completed the survey. They were all registered nurses working in oncology with different roles, such as being nurse practitioners (23%), nurse navigators (20%), infusion nurses (23%), and working in outpatient settings (93%). The findings of the survey highlight the multifaceted responsibilities of nurses in providing care across the cancer care continuum, emphasizing patient-centered care, communication, education, and empowerment, in addition to expected duties such as the administration of anticancer therapy, monitoring of side effects, and symptom management. A total of 82.6% of United States of America oncology nurses feel their workload has increased. The role of nurses in oncology is continuously evolving and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, in certain areas such as telehealth, is here to stay. Conclusions: The results of the study allow a better understanding of the emergent roles of oncology nursing. The importance of self-care initiatives and education are emphasized as critical to support nurses in their complex, busy, and emotionally charged work environment and to help retain existing nurses and attract new individuals into the profession. The study ultimately seeks to inform policy and drive professional development in oncology nursing in the United States of America.
