The Impact of Thyroid Diseases on the Working Life of Patients: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Thyroid diseases are characterized by a wide range of physical and mental symptoms that can affect biological function, emotional and social life of patients. However, their impact on work functioning is not yet fully understood. Therefore, this review aims to address the way in which thyroid diseases can affect occupational outcomes, i.e., the employment rate, sick leave, working capacity and work income of patients. A systematic review of Pubmed, Scopus and ISI Web of Knowledge databases has been performed. … Show more

“…In nearly a third of affected individuals, hyperthyroidism impairs working abilities—particularly in cases complicated by orbitopathy with diplopia. Thyroid illnesses may have an impact on many occupational outcomes, according to a recent study [ 52 ], but further research is needed to understand the association between specific pathological characteristics throughout time and workplace risk factors. This could entail complete, interdisciplinary thyroid care management, with advantages for patients’ work, social, and personal lives.…”

“…Long-term hypothyroidism and iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis have implications for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, quality of life, neurological disease, dementia, cancer treatment, and even mortality ( 7–16 ). Shorter periods with suboptimal dosage are more likely to affect quality of life, work capacity and have social consequences ( 17 , 18 ).…”

“…High circulating levels of free thyroid hormones, free thyroxine (fT4), and free triiodothyronine (fT3) have multisystemic effects causing severe patient debilitation and may impair working ability in up to a third of affected patients. [8] The exact pathophysiology of GD seen in IRIS is still not completely known. Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome‐associated GD (IRIS‐GD) occurs in the context of immunoregulatory imbalance characterized by thymic enlargement, persistence of T‐cell receptor excision circle (TREC) levels in CD4 and CD8 cells, and high circulating levels of naïve CD8 cells.…”
