The impact of type of assistance on characteristics of peritonitis in elderly peritoneal dialysis patients

Abstract: Three-fourths of elderly PD patients in the present study required assistance from family members or private caregivers. Caregiver-assisted patients were significantly older and had more comorbidities. Also, a non-significant trend of higher peritonitis incidence was observed in these patients.

“…Assisted peritoneal dialysis (PD) has emerged as a treatment option for patients who wish to receive home dialysis but have significant barriers to self-care (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Patients on assisted PD are significantly older and have a higher burden of comorbidity compared with patients on self-care PD, and therefore, adverse events may be common, including hospitalization, peritonitis, and death (8,9).…”

“…Two PD cohort studies [53,54] relied on data from regional dialysis units. The remaining three PD cohort studies [49,50,57] and all of the non-comparative and cross sectional PD studies [58-61] used data from a single hospital/dialysis unit. Of the 14 PD studies, 6 were from France [48,50-52,55,56], 3 from Canada [53,54,58], 2 from the United States of America (USA) [60,61] and one each from China [57], Taiwan [49] and Brazil [59].…”
