The Impact of Urbanization on Energy Intensity in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: This paper investigates the long-term and causal relationship between energy intensity, real GDP per capita, urbanization and industrialization in Saudi Arabia over the period 1971-2012 using the breakpoint unit root tests developed by Perron (1989) and the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model bounds testing to cointegration proposed by Pesaran et al. (2001) and employing a modified version of the Granger causality test proposed by Toda and Yamamoto (1995). Additionally, to test the robustness of the re… Show more

“…As the conventional unit root tests are biased when there is a trend stationary with an exogenous structural break (Perron 1989), we use the Perron breakpoint unit root tests to take into account the structural change in the variables (for more details on these tests, see (Belloumi and Alshehry 2016). 1 The results of the Perron breakpoint unit root tests are reported in Table 3.…”

“…The influence of urbanization on energy intensity varies in 10 Asian countries [20]. Belloumi and Alshehry [24] report the positive impact of urbanization on energy intensity in the short and long term in Saudi Arabia over the period 1971-2012. Farajzadeh and Nematollahi [25] reveal the significant role of urbanization on energy intensity reduction.…”

“…Actually, there is collinearity between lnGDP and lnURB, these two variables interact closely. Urbanization causes economic output, which in turn pushes urbanization process [80]. Standard errors in parentheses; * p < 0.1, ** p < 0.05, *** p < 0.01.…”
