The impact of weather on bicycle risk exposure

Abstract: Traffic volume is the main independent variable of risk exposure in road safety models. Cyclists as a vulnerable road users are more exposed to weather conditions than e.g. car drivers. As a result, their decision of whether to cycle is strongly related to weather conditions. It suggests that any change in the weather may have a significant effect on bicycle use. Objective of the paper was to indicate which weather parameters have a significant impact on bicycle use, how a change in weather parameters affects … Show more

“…Wessel (2020), in which rain that had been forecast for the morning but did not occur substantially reduced bicycle traffic. Other elements resulting in substantial differences between actual bicycle traffic recorded by counters and values predicted by a model (especially as regards underestimated volumes) are changes in the availability and operation of public transport (Pazdan, 2020), which also includes the construction of new bike paths making some cyclists choose different routes.…”

“…Respondents were asked to indicate how often they cycled for recreational purposes in three different stages of the lockdown: Stage 1- pre-COVID, Stage 2- during first lockdown, and Stage 3- during second lockdown. Note that the two lockdown periods were during autumn and winter of 2020 when cycling rates are historically lower ( Pazdan, 2020 ).…”

“…Researchers also point out the influence of weather conditions on bike usage. It has been proven that severe weather, such as rainfall, cold temperature, snow, or high humidity may discourage potential bike users [31,32]. These factors are, however, associated with the surroundings of the bike-sharing system and are not connected with its innate qualities like the size of the system (number of stations, number of bikes), fares and fees, location of stations, internal integration (i.e., integration of stations), and integration with other transport sub-systems in the area.…”
