Abstract: This is a literature review of the most commonly available wine packaging categories. This includes glass bottles, polyethylene terephthalate bottles (PET), bag-in-box (BIB), aluminum cans, and Tetra Pak. This review includes a description and history of each category. In addition, the market share and environmental impacts of each category are discussed. Special attention is paid to the reported impact on packaged wine flavor and aroma for each packaging type. “…Thus, preferences for different formats are not only explained by intrinsic package properties but seem to be also determined by perceptions about the wine contained in the different formats. While some of these perceptions might be justified by the fact that packaging materials in contact with wine affect some of its chemical properties (Thompson-Witrick et al., 2021), differences in wine properties' perceptions between TGB and MGB seem to be unfounded.…”

“…Acknowledging this lack of knowledge on consumers' preferences for alternative wine packaging and considering that economic and environmental concerns are driving the wine industry and consumers to investigate and adopt alternative packaging materials (Thompson-Witrick et al, 2021;Bandinelli et al, 2020), the purpose of this research is the identification and analysis of variables that might determine consumers' preferences for different wine packaging alternatives. To meet this goal, this study compares perceptions and preferences for three different formats available for low-priced wines in the Chilean market: Brick Liquid Carton, Traditional Glass Bottle (0.75 L), and Magnum Glass Bottle [1] (1.5 L).…”

“…Compared to many other types of wine packaging (e.g. glass with screwcap, synthetic, or natural cork closures; Bag-in-Box) (Revi et al 2014, Crouvisier-Urion et al 2018, the effects of beverage cans on wine chemistry and sensory properties have not been well described in the peer-reviewed literature, although some information has been reported through extension bulletins, trade journals, conference proceedings and patents (Thompson-Witrick et al 2021, Scrimgeour et al 2019, Allison et al 2020, Coetzee 2021, Stokes et al 2012. A major concern for winemakers with any packaging is oxygen exposure and subsequent wine oxidation (Revi et al 2014, Crouvisier-Urion et al 2018.…”
