The Impacts of Fertilizer Credit on Crop Production and Income in Ethiopia

Abstract: In this chapter, we evaluate the impact of fertilizer credit on crop choice, crop yield, and income using two-year panel data of 420 households in rural Ethiopia. The fertilizer credit is found to increase input application for crop production. As a consequence, it has a substantial impact on the yield of teff. We also find that the impact on net crop income per cultivated area and also on per capita income is marginal because of the low profitability due to the low output price and high input cost of agricult… Show more

“…Several empirical studies show that agricultural cooperatives improve farm productivity through their influence on the adoption of productivity-enhancing technologies Francesconi and Heerink 2011;Abebaw and Haile 2013) and by improving farm productivity (Abate et al 2014;Francesconi and Ruben 2012). For instance, in Ethiopia, cooperatives are actively involved in the dissemination of agricultural inputs and about 56% of chemical fertilizers were provided by cooperatives in the 2010 production season (Matsumoto and Yamano 2010). Cooperatives can also provide credit services to member farmers that ease production constraints (Tefera et al 2016).…”

“…Accordingly, most of the lands available for settlement are found in the lowlands that lack basic infrastructural facilities and pose serious health hazards. With little suitable land available for expansion of crop cultivation, especially in the highlands, future cereal production growth will need to come from increasing land productivity mainly through the supply, duplication and diffusion of continuously improving technology and information (Ayele et al 2006citing Reardon et al 1996Taffesse et al 2012;Elias et al 2013;Matsumoto and Yamano, 2010).…”
