The implementation of local wisdom-based learning and HOTS-based assessment: Teacher survey in Banjarmasin

Abstract: The use of local wisdom as learning sources and the empowerment of students' Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are the two components that must be carried out in the 21st-century biology learning. The purpose of this study was to explore the information about the application of local wisdom-based learning and HOTS-based assessment in Banjarmasin. This survey research involved 41 high school biology teachers in Banjarmasin who joined in Biology Teacher Working Group activities as research samples. The researc… Show more

“…The mitigation process requires the use of HOTS since disaster mitigation is a complicated issue to resolve. Improving HOTS can be carried out by the use of better teaching materials, newer learning media and more innovative, holistic learning models among other things (Abidinsyah et al, 2019;Churcher et al, 2014;Hugerat & Kortam, 2014;Husamah et al, 2018). One of recommended learning models is known as the Innovation Learning Model for Natural Science Abstract: Innovation in learning is a necessity for environmental learning in 21st century especially during the new normal era of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 .…”

“…Empowerment of students' critical thinking skills is not optimal because teachers rarely design HOTS-based learning in their classes. It is recorded that 80% of teachers often develop cognitive level assessments C1 (remembering) and C2 (understanding) to evaluate student understanding (Abidinsyah et al, 2019). In line with that, the instruments on the summative tests carried out by students contain indicators of critical thinking skills in the less category covering interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation (Wulandari et al, 2019).…”

“…It is important for teachers to teach critical thinking skills which include interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and selfregulation (Alsaleh, 2020). HOTS empowerment is also considered important because students are trained to make the best decisions to think critically in analyzing arguments (Abidinsyah et al, 2019). However, there are still studies stating that the critical thinking skills of biology students are low, so they need to be improved (Erwanto, 2020).…”

“…The HOTS can occur if teachers play a role of a facilitator. It is necessary to improve the HOTS through various learning innovations (Abidinsyah et al, 2019;Heong et al, 2012;Istiyono et al, 2020;Murtonen & Ballo, 2019;Rochman & Hartoyo, 2018;Tajudin & Chinnappan, 2016). This is especially for elementary and secondary education levels that require guidance from teachers.…”
