The Importance of Adopting a Safe System Approach—Translation of Principles into Practical Solutions

Abstract: The 1990s saw the emergence of the Swedish Vision Zero and the Dutch Sustainable Safety philosophies on road safety. At the time, both were considered somewhat radical and ambitious departures from the status quo. The principles that underpinned both the Dutch and Swedish philosophies were combined into an internationalized form, now known more widely as the Safe System. The Safe System came to attention early in the 2000s, when formally adopted by a number of countries committed to preventing severe road trau… Show more

“…Amenador and Wang (2022); Corben, et al (2022); Qurbonovna and Ubaydillo o'g'li (2022) presented guidelines for translators which derived from the major principles of translation. They focus that translation is a complex and nuanced task that requires a deep understanding of both the source language and the target language, as well as the cultural, social, and historical context in which the translation is taking place.…”

“…This can involve changing certain words or phrases to better reflect the culture of the target audience, or adding explanations or clarifications to help the audience better understand the content. This strategy is often used when the source text contains cultural references or jokes that may not be understood by the target audience (Corben, et al, 2022).…”

“…It assumes, implicitly, that there is a normative way to proceed from which any deviation has to be corrected and that there are some best practices which must be adopted to improve the road safety performance. This model is considered as "the default position", which can be "compromised" only "by exception" [7].…”

“…The safe system model aims at establishing a shared responsibility among the stakeholders, limiting large forces when a crash occurs because of the bodily limits of road users and supporting drivers who make frequent errors [2,7]. This model involves energy, informative and cognitive dimensions, which calls for a thorough investigation of its implications [8].…”

“…This gap is especially noticeable in autonomous vehicles [8], where the lack of widely available, highly accurate object-detecting technologies presents a significant obstacle to the development of fully automated and secure transportation. Furthermore, the lack of effective object identification technology hinders efforts to improve traffic management, accident avoidance, and pedestrian safety [9] in the larger transportation sector. This paper has implemented state-of-the-art models, specifically YOLO-NAS-l which is a relatively novel model and has not been implemented in previous work.…”
