The importance of aerobic fitness for tennis: a review (part 1)

Abstract: Tennis is an intermittent sport involving different physical components, one of which is aerobic fitness. Scientific research has provided information about the physiological demands of tennis competition and some specific protocols have been developed to combine aerobic testing with technical efficiency testing and training. This paper will provide a rationale behind aerobic fitness training for tennis players.

“…Training sets that elicit an increase in V ̇O2max may be helpful to increase the rate of recovery based on a higher aerobic fitness. 37,38 As the main limitations, it can be considered that the duration of points during an official game may be substantially lower than the duration simulated in this study to increase and stabilize HR and V ̇O2 . Players may reach such specific values of HR and V ̇O2 after the long rallies only.…”

“…El tenis ha evolucionado a uno de los deportes más exigentes en cuanto a condición física. No solo es requerido un gran nivel técnico, sino que además se demandan otros componentes físicos como la fuerza, potencia, resistencia, velocidad, agilidad y capacidad de sprint repetido (Fernandez-Fernandez et al, 2015) además de las vías metabólicas aeróbicas y anaeróbicas (Genevois, 2019).…”

“…Tennis is an intermittent sport in which participants need to perform high-intensity movements such as decelerations, accelerations, direction changes, and strokes over a variable duration ( Kovacs, 2007 ). During rallies, points are scored in less than three to 10 seconds on average ( Dobos et al, 2021 ), with sprints of eight to 15 m and three to four directional changes ( Genevois, 2019 ). Tennis players are widely regarded as needing greater levels of physical performance in order to execute complex shots and compete well against more elite opponents ( Ulbricht et al, 2016 ).…”
