The Importance of Collaboration in Construction Industry from Contractors’ Perspectives

The goal of this paper is to compare quality assurance in different contractor contracts by means of multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) and to select the best option. For this investigation, the authors have developed the complex of quality evaluation criteria. During experimental evaluation, the significance of criteria was determined and the expert evaluation of template construction contracts was performed. The complex comparison of contractor contracts was carried out by means of the following MADM methods: Simple Additive Weighting (SAW), Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), Complex Proportional Assessment (COPRAS) as well as the new Evaluation Based on Distance from Average Solution (EDAS). MADM. method. To determine the weights of criteria, with due consideration of uncertainty of expert evaluation, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method was applied. Evaluation of the data structure was performed by methods for the determination of objective weights: an entropy method and new criteria impact loss (CILOS) and integrated determination of objective criteria weights (IDOCRIW) methods. Expert subjective and objective weights were combined into aggregate weights. Based on the investigation performed, the authors make conclusions regarding possibilities for improving quality assurance in contractor contracts.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been an emerging concept in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry with a vast amount of promising benefits to construction projects. Implementation of BIM, however, requires comprehensive research and strategic planning. Industry-wide and organizational implementation guidelines and standards have been published around the world either to encourage organizations to adopt BIM or to present the minimum requirements to be followed where BIM implementation is a statutory obligation. In contrast, governments or organizations in several countries such as Turkey have not mandated BIM implementation and provide no guidance. Organizations in these countries which plan to adopt BIM processes are forced to develop their own implementation plans. The purpose of this study is to provide guidance in BIM implementation for construction companies in countries where BIM implementation has not been mandated particularly during the construction phase of the building projects. 23 BIM standards and guidelines covering the BIM execution process have been reviewed. Topics that need to be addressed by BIM implementation plans have been identified and categorized under four headings. A case study of BIM implementation at a large construction company that focuses on conducting quantity takeoff and cost estimation is presented, and unique challenges of BIM implementation in Turkish AEC industry are discussed.

This study was conducted in order to improve collaboration on public sector projects in the Zambian Construction Industry (ZCI) through the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM). In order to meet the research objectives, a questionnaire survey was used in collecting data and an exploratory research approach was adopted. Both quantitative and qualitative methods for data collection and analysis were also used. Worth noting as a limitation of this research is that only 64 questionnaires from the 111 that were distributed were received and this may not be representative of the ZCI. Further, only 2 provinces out the 10 in the country were considered for data collection. The findings revealed that the common collaboration challenges faced on public projects include delays in information exchange, poor project relationship and information management. This was mainly due to the huge reliance on 2D documents as a means of information exchange and the traditional procurement method. Hence, in order to eliminate collaboration challenges, the use of BIM is inevitable in the ZCI because it promotes efficient communication and coordination among project parties. This is important because construction projects involve the exchange of information among the many stakeholders involved. Therefore, if construction professionals are to attain their goals, this will require that new collaborative means are adopted, essentially adopting BIM in the ZCI and world over.
