The importance of colonoscopy bowel preparation for the detection of colorectal lesions and colorectal cancer prevention

Abstract: Background and study aims Colonoscopy for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening has reduced CRC incidence and mortality and improved prognosis. Optimal bowel preparation and high-quality endoscopic technique facilitate early CRC detection. This review provides a narrative on the clinical importance of bowel preparation for colonoscopy and highlights available bowel preparations. Methods A PubMed search was conducted through June 2019 to identify studies evaluating clinical outcomes, efficacy, safety, and … Show more

“…Symptomatic or asymptomatic individuals considered at high risk are invited for screening (Christopher et al, 2019). Prior to the procedure, individuals are asked to follow a diet, ingest laxatives and 2 L of solution the night before the procedure to prepare the colon and have a clean environment for the inspection (Sharma et al, 2020). This process is not well accepted (Kelly et al, 2012) and a poor preparation is related to an incomplete colonoscopy (Shah et al, 2007;Brahmania et al, 2012).…”

“…Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Over the past three decades, the rates of colon cancer and colon cancer-related mortality have decreased due to the introduction of colonoscopy and polypectomy of adenomatous polyps[ 40 , 41 ]. A large cohort study conducted in the United States has also demonstrated an approximately 70% reduction in deaths after the institution of colonoscopy[ 42 ].…”

“…While the majority of healthy patients undergo colonoscopy safely and effectively after the use of any commercial bowel preparation, certain patients, including those with chronic diseases such as renal disease or diabetes, require special consideration. 19 , 20 A low-volume bowel preparation that is safe and effective in high-risk populations, such as those with renal impairment or diabetes, would be welcomed.…”
