The importance of drying and grinding samples for determining mobile chromium fractions in polluted river sediments

Abstract: A possible impact of sample preparation on the chemical fractionation results is generally underestimated in studies of forms of occurrence of heavy metals in river sediments. Our analysis of the recently published results of sequential extraction of chromium has revealed the effect of sample grinding on the result of determination of mobile chromium fractions in river sediments. This observation has been experimentally verified along with the analysation of potential effect of river sediment drying conditions… Show more

“…These chemical compounds are persistent in the environment, they bioaccumulate and harmful influence on human health. The biggest threat is caused by PAHs inhaled with ambient air [4,5]. Some compounds from the PAH group are carcinogenic and mutagenic [6][7][8][9].…”

“…Air pollution is considered as one of the main factors affecting the population. It can cause negative changes in the respiratory and circulatory systems, even when concentrations do not exceed permissible levels [4,5,[15][16][17]. It should be highlighted that in many European countries PM10 (particulate matter), NO 2 , and O 3 concentrations still exceeded the permissible limits in 2020 [18].…”

“…The pressure of the environment and society has been increased in the face of river sediments because of the rapid development of industrial production and cities. Many countries around the world have paid more and more attention to treatment of river sediments (Fang et al 2019a, b;Akcay et al 2003;Pejman et al 2015;Teatini et al 2011;Jankowski et al 2017;Liu and Cai 2019;Trojanowska and Świetlik 2019). Treatment methods of river sediments are different depending on the national conditions of different countries.…”
