The importance of excluding selected samples when estimating prevalence of mental disorders in the general prison population—A response to Baggio and Efthimiou (2024)

Abstract

In our recently published meta-analysis, we examined the prevalence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among adults in prison . By only retaining studies with unselected samples of adult prisoners, our scope was more focused compared to a previous meta-analysis which included data on all people living in detention, such as forensic psychiatric patients and other people detained in non-prison settings (Baggio et al., 2018).In their commentary to our article, Baggio and Efthimiou (2024) mainly question our decision to only include unselected samples and present a re-analysis of the ADHD prevalence in detained adults (in prison or elsewhere).
