The Importance of Ionic Liquids in the Modification of Starch and Processing of Starch-Based Materials

Abstract: The main applications of ionic liquids in chemistry and material research on one of the most important natural polymers—starch—are presented in this review. A brief characterization of ionic liquids and the advantages and disadvantages of using them in the modification and processing of polysaccharides is presented. The latest reports on the use of various ionic liquids as solvents or co-solvents; as media for synthesizing starch derivatives in oxidation, etherification, esterification, and transesterification… Show more

“…It was also confirmed by the higher crosslinking density of the vulcanizates containing starch. In the case of BmiCl, it probably resulted from the ability of BmiCl to dissolve the starch, and thus the compatibility of starch with NR elastomer was enhanced compared to rubber composites without BmiCl [ 18 , 53 , 54 ]. In contrast, the positive effect of APTES on the crosslinking reactions could result from the possible combining of organo-silanes with starch and forming C-Si-O-connects with the hydrogen bonding.…”

“…Moreover, direct incorporation of hydrophilic starch into natural rubber (NR) matrix results in deterioration of the mechanical properties of NR composites [ 12 ]. Therefore, several approaches have been conducted to improve the compatibility between the starch and NR elastomer, i.e., modification of polymer matrix before mixing with starch [ 15 ], application of compatibilizer to improve the interaction between starch and polymer matrix [ 16 ] or starch modification before mixing with a polymer [ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…The ionic liquids can be divided in three groups: cation, anion, and physical state at room temperature. 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [BMIM]Cl and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [AMIM]Cl were the predominant Ionic solvents and reaction media for starches such as corn starch [ 130 ]. Corn starch was grafted in [AMIM]Cl and [BMIM]Cl, which enhances the gelatinized and catalyze the decomposition [ 131 , 132 ].…”

“…The literature reports from the last few years show that ionic liquids can be used for efficient biocatalysis [ 7 , 8 ]. In addition, it is worth noting that although they proved to be sufficiently good solvents and reaction media for starches of various botanical origins, for the purposes of esterification and transesterification, they were used mostly for corn starches, with different content of individual fractions, in reactions without the use of a catalyst or catalyzed by pyridine or lipases ( Table 3 ) [ 144 , 145 , 146 ].…”
