“…Given the importance of leisure in positively influencing the psychological health of women with multiple life roles (Pearson, 2008), this finding is an important consideration in understanding the leisure-well-being relationship. The body of literature supporting the importance of physically active and passive leisure on well-being is well established Trenberth & Dewe, 2002;Tkach and Lyubomirsky, 2006) and yet the results suggest that the perception that one leisure activity is conflicting with another can negatively influence the positive influence of leisure and may result in lower levels of well-being. The mechanism at work can only by hypothesized, however other studies on leisure in women have associated leisure with negative feelings when it conflicts with other life roles.…”

“…Studies have found that extracurricular activity participation is associated with high educational status, competence (Mahoney, Cairns, & Farmer, 2003), psychological well-being, and better overall life outcomes (Bartko & Eccles, 2003). Extracurricular activity participation also appears to ameliorate the effects of stress for some adolescents (Trenberth & Dewe, 2002).…”

“…The loss of mobility further decreases self-esteem to carry out recreational activities [11,12]. As a stress-buffer and response to coping with stress, recreation is vital to the well-being of elderly people [13]. In addition, the length of institutionalization in older adults is positively associated with likelihood of depression and negatively associated with their self-esteem.…”
