“…At present, although there are an increasing number of scholars analyzing the benefit of the culture–tourism town, with some relevant index systems established, there are few studies on the social benefit of the culture–tourism town. Most of the literature focuses on the economic benefit (Ramsey and Malcolm, 2018 ; Yousif, 2018 ). Therefore, with China's national conditions and policy development taken into account, the social benefit evaluation indexes are selected by referring to previous literature.…”

“…Shifting the view of regional communities from being passive recipients of development projects and initiatives to one where they are active participants can also bring a substantial change in the nature and scope of those projects (Ramsey & Malcolm, 2018). Involving local people in the development and delivery of initiatives designed to improve their lifestyles and circumstances ensures that local context and culture are paramount in the design of projects and this, in turn, helps to improve the effectiveness of service provision and enhances project efficiencies and creates a vital social system that fosters collaboration (Cornwall & Gaventa, 2000;Erdiaw-Kwasie & Alam, 2016).…”

In contrast, tourism in the BBBs has remained comparatively neglected and under-researched (Ramsey & Malcolm, 2017). Although case studies from rural in-between places in various countries exist (for example Carson & Koster, 2015;Fullerton, 2015;Duarte Alonso & Liu, 2013;Woznicka, Koster, & Lemelin, 2010), their geographic characteristics and special circumstances as BBBs have not been explicitly conceptualised.…”
