Introduction: Performing a physical examination of a patient is one of the basic clinical competencies in nursing practice. It forms the basis for preparing nursing students for practice. Obtaining subjective and objective data through physical assessment enables nurses to make a diagnosis of the clinical condition of patients. The physical examination is primarily aimed at assessing the condition of the patient, so that an accurate nursing diagnosis can be made and appropriate measures can be taken to correct the problems that accompany the patients. The ability to conduct a physical examination enables better cooperation with other members of the therapeutic team. It is also believed that the ability of nurses to conduct a physical examination significantly enhances the competence of nurses. The aim of this paper was to assess the usefulness of physical examination in daily professional practice according to nursing staff. Material and methods: The study was conducted in a group of 186 nurses employed at a hospital in Podkarpackie voivodeship in Poland. The study was conducted in May 2023. The study used a diagnostic survey method with the use of a proprietary survey questionnaire. Participation in the study was random, anonymous, and voluntary. Results and conclusions: 35.9% of the nurses surveyed claimed they did not perform physical examinations very often. In contrast, 24.3% of the respondents said they performed them very often. 16.5% of respondents said they performed them several times a day. The majority of respondents believed that they were the right people to perform physical examinations. According to the respondents, physical examination is an important part of a nurse's work and has a great impact on patient treatment. Too infrequent performance of physical examinations among nurses is due to work overload and additional duties, as well as lack of confidence.

This study aimed to understand how physical examination occurs in nurses' hospital practice. It is a descriptive and exploratory research, with a qualitative approach. Eighteen nurses from the medical clinic of a public hospital unit, located in the state of Tocantins, Brazil, were interviewed. The collection took place through an open interview that took place in 2015. The data was analyzed according to the assumptions of the Content Analysis. This study was approved by the Permanent Education Center of the researched hospital and by the Human Research Ethics Committee under protocol 003/2015. Results: Two categories emerged: The moment of the physical examination in the nurse's practice is a limit to perform it, as there are other demands on the service and when it is done, it is upon the client's admission; and how the physical examination is performed in the nurse's practice, when it occurs, it is often not performed completely, as professionals do not feel with certain skills. Final Considerations: the time to perform the physical examination, the work overload, insufficient material resources and reduced technical knowledge and skills, imply the physical examination in the nurse's hospital practice.

Introduction. Medical history and physical examination are basic elements allowing nurses to assess patients’ health. The ability to auscultate the chest in combination with anatomical and physiological knowledge constitute a quick and reliable method of differentiation and diagnosis of many diseases.Aim. The aim of the study was to assess knowledge and skills in the field of chest auscultation among nursing staff.Material and method. A prospective, pilot observational study was conducted on a group of 51 nurses. The level of knowledge and skills in the field of chest auscultation and independence in undertaking this activity in professional work were assessed. The knowledge test developed by the author, survey questionnaire and SimScope 360-3400 trainer were used. P<0.05 value was considered statistically significant.Results. Lack of chest auscultation skills was observed in 10% of the respondents, although none of them revealed lack of knowledge in this respect (p<0.001). Higher level of knowledge correlated with higher level of skills of the respondents, while a lower level of knowledge conditioned a lower level of skills (p=0.049). In the respondents’ opinion, auscultation of the lungs and heart are activities performed only by a doctor.Conclusions. Despite a moderate level of knowledge and skills in the field of chest auscultation, nursing staff do not use physical examination techniques in their daily work.
