The Importance of Rhythmic Stimulation for Preterm Infants in the NICU

Abstract: The fetal environment provides the fetus with multiple potential sources of rhythmic stimulation that are not present in the NICU. Maternal breathing, heartbeats, walking, dancing, running, speaking, singing, etc., all bathe the fetus in an environment of varied rhythmic stimuli: vestibular, somatosensory, tactile, and auditory. In contrast, the NICU environment does not offer the same proportion of rhythmic stimulation. After analyzing the lack of rhythmic stimulation in the NICU, this review highlights the d… Show more

“…14 Adequate maternal guidance and motivation to provide in utero environment and appropriate stimulation can benefit the newborn admitted to NICU facing stress related to it. 15 The many components of supportive care for preterm must be actively taken into account while developing comprehensive developmental support interventions. It is necessary to perform further study to develop initiatives that directly assist families of premature infants.…”

“…Accidental stimulation leads to an emotional disturbance in the child. Rhythmic stimuli allow for the synchronization of rhythms, leading to the facilitation of selective attention and the learning of perception [ 73 ]. At the time of birth, significant environmental changes occur, differing from what life has been in the womb of the baby’s mother.…”

“…Attachment development requires synchronous interactions in which both the parent and the preterm newborn are sensitive to one another. When evaluating the preterm infant's behavioral states, the mother's different sensory and rhythmic interventions have beneficial effects on development [ 10 ].…”
