The importance of tick-borne diseases in public health

Abstract: Ticks are common vectors of pathogenic microorganisms causing contagious diseases. The aim of this paper is to draw attention of family physicians to the necessity to take into account various infections and contagions related to ticks in diagnostic considerations. Tick bite can lead to a simultaneous infection by multiple pathogens. These arachnids are vectors among Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis and meningitis, Q fever, tularemia, rickettsiosis, anaplasmosis (ehrlichiosis)

“…Since the turn of the nineteenth century when the first description of a tick-transmitted infection was made (Smith and Kilborne 1893 ), many tick species are now known reservoirs and vectors of a multitude of pathogens that cause significant morbidity and mortality in both humans and animals. Some of the diseases that have since been described such as East Coast fever and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever are challenging public health, veterinary, and socio-economic threats due to their increasing occurrence, pathogenicity, and economic impact (Adams et al 2016 ; Kuehn 2019 ; Wesołowski et al 2014 ).…”

“…Tick-borne diseases (TBD) are a public health problem in the world [1]. Ticks harbor a great diversity of microorganisms, some of which are pathogenic to humans and other mammals [2]. Ticks are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites associated with the transmission of viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, which affect both human and animal health [3,4].…”

“…Patient counseling on the signs and symptoms of early Lyme disease should be provided. 9 Chemoprophylaxis can be considered, with a single dose of doxycycline (200 mg), for patients who have had a tick attached to them for more than 24 hours. 4 In Canada, Lyme-endemic areas are found in suitable woodland habitats for ticks, generally the southern parts of each province, with a flare-up of cases from late spring to early fall.…”
