The importance of using multiple outcome measures in infant research

Abstract: Collecting data with infants is notoriously difficult. As a result, many of our studies consist of small samples, with only a single measure, in a single age group, at a single time point. With renewed calls for greater academic rigor in data collection practices, using multiple outcome measures in infant research is one way to increase rigor, and, at the same time, enable us to more accurately interpret our data. Here, we illustrate the importance of using multiple measures in psychological research with exam… Show more

“…Although symbolic play appears to be a universal human behavior, its prevalence is moderated by culture (Lillard, 2017). Thus, following work such as Fletcher et al (2020), it will be important to test our hypotheses in more diverse samples. Finally, our manipulation of play context was dependent on the toys we selected for each condition.…”

“…Emerging research suggests that patterns of affect-biased attention across tasks within individuals may better capture relations with anxiety and anxiety risk 10 , 11 . Thus, it is important for researchers to examine relations between multiple attentional mechanisms captured by different tasks within a single sample 12 . However, because little work has collected data across multiple tasks within a large sample of participants, how to best model relations across tasks is still an open question.…”

“…Researchers could then examine what developmental, individual difference or contextual factors relate to membership in one affect-biased attention group versus another. Both variable- and person-centered approaches to analyzing data are viable with the availability of multiple measures and may answer distinctly different questions despite retaining the same underlying metrics across analytic methods 12 .…”

“…The scope of the current review does not allow us to discuss in depth the wide numbers of methods and measures that can be used to capture and assess attention (for a more thorough discussion, see Fu & Pérez-Edgar, 2019). These methods, particularly when used together in the same study with the same participants, can help us better triangulate how attention emerges, is deployed, and then influences broad patterns of thought and behavior (LoBue et al, 2020). Of course, every method has its limitations.…”
