The Imprint of Nova Nucleosynthesis in Presolar Grains

Abstract: Infrared and ultraviolet observations of nova light curves have confirmed grain formation in their expanding shells that are ejected into the interstellar medium by a thermonuclear runaway. In this paper, we present isotopic ratios of intermediate-mass elements up to silicon for the ejecta of CO and ONe novae, based on 20 hydrodynamic models of nova explosions. These theoretical estimates will help to properly identify nova grains in primitive meteorites. In addition, equilibrium condensation calculations are … Show more

“…Of the combination of theoretical hydrodynamic calculations and nuclear reaction networks describing element synthesis in stellar environments, only those for total ejecta compositions in neon nova outbursts specifically predict the combination of negligible 3 He, low 4 He/ 20 Ne, high 20 Ne/ 21 Ne, and 20 Ne/ 22 Ne ratios in and above the range of ∼25 to ∼150 (Figure 3) measured in these particles (Starrfield et al 2009;José et al 2004).…”

“…This suggests we are now on the verge of being able to detect this signal. In addition, Ne isotopic ratios in some meteoritic presolar graphite grains imply the in-situ decay of 22 Na produced by nucleosynthesis in novae [13,14] and/or supernovae [15].…”
