The incidence and prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity

Abstract: The thyroid gland is the most common organ affected by autoimmune disease. Other autoimmune diseases, most notably type 1 diabetes mellitus, are increasing in incidence. It is unknown whether autoimmune thyroid diseases are following the same pattern. This review summarizes studies of autoimmune thyroid disease incidence and prevalence since 1950, not only for these measures of occurrences, but also for commenting on identified risk factors for thyroid autoimmunity. We find that incidence of autoimmune thyroid… Show more

“…It was shown that iodide-induced hypothyroidism was precipitated by either prolonged excessive intracellular iodide concentration, or transition from iodine deficiency to iodine sufficiency or excess, that increased the incidence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and hypothyroidism, especially in young women [37]. Autoimmune disease affects thyroid gland more than any other organ in the body [38,39]. Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a primary and permanent hypothyroidism, and the most common autoimmune disease.…”

“…Aus der hohen Prävalenz und Inzidenz dieser Erkrankung, welche mitunter als "Volkserkrankung" (14) bezeichnet wird, ergeben sich eine große medizinische und gesundheitsökonomische Relevanz (16). Es existieren Hinweise, dass die Inzidenz der HT in den letzten Jahrzehnten zugenommen haben könnte (10,17,18).…”
