The incidence and risk factors for postoperative urinary retention in neurosurgical patients

Abstract: Background:Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a common problem in adult neurosurgical patients. The incidence of POUR is unknown and the etiology has not been well established. POUR can lead to urogenital damage, prolonged hospital stay, higher cost, and infection. This study elucidates several risk factors that contribute to POUR in a variety of neurosurgical patients in one institution. Methods:A total of 137 neurosurgical patients were prospectively followed up for the development of POUR, which we de… Show more

“…The findings validate a process for assisting the registered nurses to easily identify the number of catheter days and education to reinforce the importance of reporting the number of catheter days at shift change is needed to further reduce the total number of catheter days experienced by the patient. (Alsaidi et al, 2013) In my study almost 49% of the study group felt the presence of an IUC was convenient, while 13% were uncertain about their perceptions related to the convenience of an IUC. The study participants remember which of their patients have indwelling urinary catheters, but 32.1% of them do not remember to remind the physicians that their patients have indwelling urinary catheters.…”

“…Alsaidi et al examined neurosurgical patients to help elucidate the etiology, incidence, and risk factors of POUR in neurosurgical patients. 5 The study examined 137 neurosurgical patients prospectively after undergoing neurosurgical intervention particularly in the spine. In the study, 118 (86%) underwent spinal surgery with 45 patients admitted for cervical/thoracic surgery and 73 patients admitted for lumbar spinal surgery.…”

“…The most common surgeries that might cause POUR are the abdominal, anorectal, colorectal, urologic, and gynecologic ones. Surgery-induced alterations in sacral reflex can cause contraction of the bladder sphincter and bring about POUR (5). After surgeries on other parts of the body, POUR may happen due to sedation, anesthesia, decreased mobility, fluid overload, medications, pain, and anxiety (7).…”
