The Incidence of Epstein-Barr Virus Primary Infection Among Suspected Patients Referred to Namazi Hospital of Shiraz, Iran

Abstract: Background:Many children become infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) during their childhood. Since the clinical profile of EBV primary infection is challenging, it is important to use the best diagnostic clinical means. Detection of IgM against viral capsid antigen (VCA) by ELISA has been shown to be a reliable method. Objectives:This study was conducted to demonstrate the incidence of EBV primary infection, among suspected patients referred to Namazi hospital, Shiraz, Iran.Patients and Methods:The sample inc… Show more

“…In this study, we identified a prevalence rate of approximately 7% of primary EBV infection in adult HAART-free PLHIV in a state of the Brazilian Amazon region. Our findings were similar to the epidemiological data on the general prevalence of primary infection among immunocompetent adults in emerging countries 35 – 37 . However, there were discrepancies when compared to data from other studies with patients immunocompromised by HIV-1; our findings were lower than the values observed even in countries with similar socioeconomic profiles 26 , 38 , 39 .…”

“…By performing IgM antibody ELISA to VCA of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), we determined the prevalence of EBV, and only 2.3% of samples tested positive. In a study conducted by Moeini et al, it was found that out of 346 patients, 30.0% (104) were positive for EBV VCA-IgM [ 25 ].…”

“…A study in Espírito Santo, Brazil showed a higher prevalence of EBV antibodies in children and adolescents, with more frequent infections occurring at a younger age in children from families of low socioeconomic status (14). Another study in the Islamic Republic of Iran between 2007 and 2011 showed that 91.5% of primary EBV infections occurred by the age of 10 years compared with 72.4% in our study (15). However, a study in the USA found that about 50% of primary EBV infection in American children occurred between 6 and 8 years of age (12).…”
