The incidence, repeatability and effect on dam performance of twinning in British Friesian cattle

Abstract: SUMMARYAn estimate of the frequency of twin calvings was obtained from the analysis of over 38 000 calvings of Friesian cows in M.M.B. milk-recorded herds. The incidence of twinning increased from 0·54 % in the first parity to 3·37% in the fifth parity. A significant excess of cows above expected produced either more than one set of twins or no twins at all. Repeatability ranged from 0·0 for cows with three calvings to 0·063 for cows with five calvings.Data on lactation yield and duration, butterfat percentage… Show more

“…Depression in 305-day, ME milk yield following a twin birth was evident (P<.05) in twin calvers that gave birth to twins without dystocia and, although not significant (P>.05), in those that showed dystocia with the twin birth. This result agrees with (2,4,9,11). However, no depression in milk yield was in the twin pregnancy lactation of either group, contrary to (14).…”

“…Effects of increased dystocia (5,9) or of prolonged calving interval following twinning (2,4,9,11) also are important considerations. The purpose of this study was to examine production of Holsteins that produced twins to estimate effects of twin pregnancy on milk and fat yields, on the subsequent lactation, and on calving interval.…”

“…The decline of 0-05 % fat in the twin lactation following a single birth was significantly different from the increase over the same period of 0-01 % fat among single-birth contemporaries, and accords well with the findings of Bowman and Hendy (1970). A similar difference in lactation length was also found, but the contrast was undoubtedly diminished by truncation at 305 days.…”

“…the earlier first calving and the shorter life of the cows in recent years than in the 1920's. Table 13 presents an analysis of variance of the population data for the Swedish Red and White cattle employing the same type of model as that used by BOWMAN and HENDY (1970). The repeatability of twinning (rp) in the population was estimated and since the number of calvings is fairly high, especially in the lower age groups, the estimates show a continuous series of increasing values from two to seven completed calvings in the groups.…”

“…These problems have been discussed recently in a comprehensive review by HENDY and BOWMAN (1970). The major topic considered here is the causes of variation in the frequency of MZ and DZ twinning.…”
