The Induction of Intracranial Neoplasms by the Inoculation of Avian Sarcoma Virus in Perinatal and Adult Rats

Abstract: The induction of intracranial neoplasms following the intracerebral inoculation of avian sarcoma virus (ASV) in neonatal mammals is well established. The present study demonstrates the susceptibility of adult rats and compares the incidence and morphology of tumors induced by a uniform inoculum of the Bratislava-77 strain of ASV in adult, neonatal, and fetal Fischer 344 rats. Post-inoculation mortality varied significantly between groups inoculated at 1, 10 and 100 days and was most precipitous in perinatally … Show more

“…In contrast, Menegoz (30) did not detect an association between contact with sheep and the risk of brain tumors. Possible explanations for a relation with wool exposure are unclear, although employment in wool processing has been shown to cause infectious disease (31)(32)(33), and infectious etiologies for brain tumors have been hypothesized (34,35).…”

“…Avian retroviruses (avian leukosis/sarcoma group) cause variable malignant neoplasms in chickens (Beard, 1980;Payne & Fadly, 1997). Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) in this group induces neurogenic tumours in many species following intracerebral inoculation (Copeland et al, 1976;Beard, 1980). Although chickens inoculated with RSV develop meningioma (Vasquez-Lopez, 1936;Beard, 1980), the relationship between the neoplasm and RSV is still unclear.…”

“…RT-2 is derived from an avian sarcoma virus-induced brain tumor in the Fischer 344 rat. 25 ECV304 is an immortalized human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) line. 26,27 Both RT-2 and ECV304 cells were maintained in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM; Seromed, Berlin, Germany) that was supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS; Biological Industries, Israel), 2 mM Lglutamate, 100 U/mL penicillin and 100 lg/mL streptomycin.…”
