The infarct‐limiting effect of cerebral ischaemic postconditioning in rats depends on the middle cerebral artery branching pattern

Abstract: Cerebral ischaemic postconditioning (PostCon) is a recently discovered endogenous neuroprotective phenomenon that occurs after several brief bouts of reperfusion/ischaemia instituted immediately after prolonged cerebral ischaemia. Data on the extent of PostCon-mediated infarct size limitation in models of focal cerebral ischaemia-reperfusion are controversial. In this study, we investigated the infarct-limiting effect of PostCon in the rat model of focal cerebral ischaemia-reperfusion. The relationship between… Show more

“…Recently, Shcherbak et al (2013) reported that, a multiple branching MCA pattern, which presumably has better collateral blood supply to the affected MCA territory, displayed a large range of infarct volume as compared to animals with a bifurcation MCA pattern in the adult rat brain. We also have observed in the developing rat brain (at P7 and P14), that the only permanent MCA occlusion induced a rapid (within the first 5 min after occlusion) increase in Fig.…”

“…In this study, the ischemic postC protocol consisting of 5 episodes each of 10 s of ischemia and 10s of re-flow [previously shown to be protective (Zhao et al, 2006)] was effective in limiting infarct size limitation only in animals with the typical bifurcating MCA branching pattern. In animals with a multiple branching MCA pattern or a combination of multiple branching with bifurcation, which presumably have better collateral blood supply to the affected MCA territory, ischemic postC was ineffective (Shcherbak et al, 2012).…”

“…При этом выраженность цитопротективного эффекта ИПостК во многом определяется видом эксперимен-тального животного, а также зависит от эксперимен-тальной модели или способа моделирования ише-мии-реперфузии [8]. Несмотря на достаточное коли-чество исследований, механизмы реализации протективного потенциала ИПостК в различных органах и тканях остаются малоизученными.…”
