The influence of a year-round tillage and residue management model on soil N fractions in a wheat-maize cropping system in central China

Abstract: Tillage practice and residue management play important roles in N pool in soils. This study determined the impacts of tillage practice and residue management on crop yield. It also investigated the distribution, fractionation, and stratification of N at soil at depths ranging from 0 to 60 cm under wheat–maize cropping systems. Three treatments were established in 2009: no-tillage with straw removal for winter wheat and summer maize (NT), no-tillage with straw mulching for winter wheat and summer maize (NTS), n… Show more

“…Environmental influences on shifts in AMF communities. Tillage and cover crop residue management are particularly imperative for controlling plant-microbe interactions and crop performance 75,76 . In general, cover crop residues that have been incorporated into the soil surface by conventional tillage systems release allelopathic substances that can inhibit weed germination, establishment, and growth 77 .…”

“…Crop residue retention is one of the three components [(a) minimum mechanical soil disturbance, (b) permanent soil cover, and (c) crop rotation] of conservation agriculture (CA) (Kumar, Panda, Srivastava, & Mishra, 2017; Ojeda et al, 2015; Ye et al, 2019). Crop residues reduce the ills of conventional agriculture (Das et al, 2020; Das, Ghosh, Lal, Saha, & Ngachan, 2017; Kassam et al, 2014) and improve the soil for adaptation to climate risks (Thierfelder et al, 2018).…”

“…In addition, many studies have shown that tillage practices and stubble management play an important role in the soil nitrogen pool. No tillage with straw mulching increased the TN content of the topsoil and affected soil nitrogen cycle (Ye et al 2019 ). In present study, straw mulching treatment resulted in a 6.60% and 4.01% increase in TN and AN content, respectively.…”

“…The present study found the contents of NH 4 + -N and NO 3 − -N in straw mulching groups decreased significantly during wheat harvest compared with the no straw mulching groups. Therefore, no tillage with straw mulching significantly reduced the content of mineral nitrogen in the surface soil and slowed down the deep accumulation of nitrate nitrogen in the soil to a certain extent (Ye et al 2019 ; Dong et al 2019 ). The present study also confirmed that straw mulching and fertilization increased the content of AK.…”
