The Influence of Adsorbed Solvent (Lyospheres) on the Stability of Colloids

Abstract

The stability and functioning of water‐based colloids can be significantly reduced by the addition of inorganic and organic electrolytes. Organic compounds, such as DMSO, acetone, formamide, and urea, also affect the performance of colloidal formulations. In this contribution, the complex interference of the structure in the dispersion medium with the structure of the colloidal particles and its impact on the dispersion stability are investigated. Attention focuses on the interactions of some organic cosolvents with the corona of colloidal polymer particles.
