“…In Antarctica, the fauna influence is of great importance as an organism soil forming factor and happens mainly through the pedogenic process known as ornithogenesis Tatur and Myrcha, 1984). The ornithogenesis, represented by the Rookeries Distance covariate, consists in the influence of seabirds (mainly penguins) in soil genesis by the deposition and microbial decomposition of guano, which enriches the soil through a sea-land transfer of nutrients (Abakumov et al, 2021;Bokhorst et al, 2007), notably P (which explains the great importance for this attribute), and promotes intense geochemical changes through the interaction of the guano leachates with the mineral substrate Pereira et al, 2013;Tatur and Barczuk, 1985). The ornithogenesis is more effective in MA due to the large presence of rookeries, which explains the highest contents of P predicted in this region, with the already cited exception of Hope Bay.…”
