The influence of coexisted monomer on thermal, mechanical, and hydrolytic properties of poly(p‐dioxanone)

Abstract: Poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDO), a typical aliphatic poly(ether‐ester), is generally synthesized via ring‐opening polymerization of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one (p‐dioxanone, PDO) monomer. However, a quite amount of PDO monomer should coexist with PPDO product due to the characteristics of the equilibrium polymerization. To clarify the effects of PDO on the properties of PPDO, a series of PPDO/PDO mixtures with different PDO content were prepared by adding PDO to pure PPDO. The thermal, mechanical, and hydrolytic properties of P… Show more

“…During the hydrolysis process, the ester bonds of PPDO units were mainly attacked, and produced low molecular weight polymers with carboxylic and hydroxyl end groups. The formed carboxylic acid end group will catalyze further hydrolysis into low molecular weight water-soluble oligomers, which has been well demonstrated by the previous literatures [45][46].…”

“…Hydrolysis degradation in initial high‐molecular‐weight PDO takes place randomly along the chains similar to other polyester degradation behaviors . Once the monomer p ‐dioxanone that is a hydroxyl acid exists as one of the degradation products, it acts as catalyst to accelerate the hydrolysis process in a dominant chain‐end cleavage mechanism . In the current study, PBS buffer solution was changed every week and solution pH value was also monitored to be around 7.4.…”

“…The monomer PDO (3.0 g, 29.4 mmol) and the initiator 1,4-benzenedimethanol were placed into a round-bottomed flask in a certain proportion, and stannous caprylate was also added as the catalyst [ 30 ]. The experimental ratios and conditions are shown in Table S3 .…”
