The article's primary purpose is to determine the attitude of Czech entrepreneurs towards innovation by comparing data obtained before and during the pandemic. Moreover, to compare the perception of the risks associated with the pandemic among Czech and Polish entrepreneurs. The use of innovation helps transform and modernize products, thereby affecting a firm's competitiveness in the market. At the same time, the introduction of new technologies allows the company to gain an advantage in creating new products that can allow it to expand its activities abroad and, thus, open up new markets. It can play an essential role in the company's development during a difficult market situation in its own country. This article examines trends in SMEs' drive to innovate in a pandemic. It also compares the results of entrepreneurs from the Czech Republic and Poland. The data obtained revealed that despite the overall negative impact of the pandemic on the activities of SMEs, it had a positive effect on the attitude of entrepreneurs towards the introduction of innovations. The willingness of Czech SMEs to innovate in the near future has increased by almost 23%. Also, during the pandemic, the expectations of entrepreneurs for help and decisive steps from the state increased. In this way, entrepreneurs preferred to rely on government assistance in financing the company than on banks, and the percentage of expectations for advantageous conditions from banks decreased by 19%. A comparison of data between Polish and Czech SMEs indicated differences in the perception of the main risk of a pandemic, where Czech entrepreneurs have fewer problems selling products or services (32% against 48%).

The aim of the paper is to assess the impact of the length of entrepreneurship on the perception of the most important business risks in Slovakia and the Visegrad Group of Countries (V4 countries). The empirical research was conducted in 2019-2020. It was focused on assessing the state of enterprise risk management (ERM) application. The research file contained 422 online questionnaires completed by owners and managers of enterprises (OMEs). The results of this case study were compared with the results of similar studies performed in the V4 countries in 2017-2018. In total, 1,781 OMEs participated in the surveys mentioned. The following statistical methods were used to assess the data: ANOVA, Bartlett’s test, Agostini test, good fit test, and Grubbs test. The overall results of the empirical research highlight the significance and importance of the assessment of business risks in the V4 countries. The results in Slovakia in 2019-2020 and the research results in the V4 countries in 2017-2018 show that OMEs still consider market and economic risks to be most important in their business. Market and economic risks are related to sources that exert the most negative influence on enterprise success. The results are valuable for entrepreneurs, enterprise managers and institutions that provide comprehensive entrepreneurship support in the V4 countries. The overall results are significant at the regional, national, and international levels of the V4 countries and have the ability to strengthen the competitiveness of entrepreneurs within the EU common market.

The present paper focuses on female startup founders in Hungary. Numerous studies examine female entrepreneurship, but the topic of female startups is a less explored area. The research was carried out in two stages: at first in 2019 through an online survey and in-depth interviews, and then in May 2021 with in-depth interviews due to the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mixed research methodology was used and comprised of an online questionnaire administered in startup-themed closed social media groups (n=113) and in-depth interviews among experts and members of the ecosystem (n=7+7). The aim was to conclude how potential female startup founders could be encouraged and what form of support should be given to them, as well as to explore the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on female startup entrepreneurs. The results show that 70 percent of respondents have their own business, these were set up by both sexes between the ages of 24 and 35. The respondents mostly use equity when starting their businesses. Although the proportion of women among startup founders is very low, a positive entrepreneurial attitude can be observed among them. The startup ecosystem is centralised in Hungary; it is only emerging in some major university cities outside the capital. The strengthening role of startup communities and social media is unquestionable. Furthermore, the results reveal limiting factors, especially complex ones hindering female start-ups, which can typically be traced back to family and social reasons. To overcome these obstacles governments should continue facilitating startup development. The pandemic was considered as an opportunity to promote new ideas and features, concentrate on design and finetune their startup businesses.
