The influence of concern about crime on levels of psychological distress in the former Soviet Union

Abstract: This study provides preliminary evidence of a relationship between fear of crime and psychological distress in the study countries, with possibly a small mediating influence of social capital. Further studies are required to explore the relationship between fear of crime, social capital and mental health in the region.

“…Unlike our study, which treats perception of safety as one component of social capital, Roberts et al observe a small mediating role of social capital on the relationship between fear of crime and psychological distress. They confirm the existence of a strong direct association between fear of crime and psychological distress (Roberts et al 2012). The lack of association between perception of safety and self-rated health among women in this SAGE study is surprising and needs further investigation.…”

“…The effect size of the association is stronger among older men in the Russian Federation and South Africa, and moderate among Chinese and Indian older men. Roberts et al show a significant relationship between fear of criminal activities and psychological distress among populations in eight former Soviet countries (Roberts et al 2012). Unlike our study, which treats perception of safety as one component of social capital, Roberts et al observe a small mediating role of social capital on the relationship between fear of crime and psychological distress.…”

“…These were categorised as ‘Poor’ self-rated health (comprising the ‘Poor’ and ‘Very poor’ categories (coded ‘1’)) and ‘Good/Fair’ self-rated health (comprising the remaining categories (coded ‘0’)). To assess psychological distress, we used a slightly modified version of a measure that has been employed in several previous studies in the countries in this region [35], [36]. Modification was necessary because a question on loneliness was included in the original 12-item scale.…”

“…Third, fear of crime may also limit outdoor activities, including exercise, which can also be harmful for mental health (Ross, 1993;. Although researchers have generally found a negative association between fear of crime and mental health in a variety of national contexts (Green, Gilbertson, and Grimsley, 2002;Roberts et al, 2012;Ross, 1993;Stafford, Chandola, and Marmot, 2007), it would be imprudent to interpret such an association as a causal relationship. First, as already noted, these studies are mainly based on cross-sectional data, which do not allow researchers to rule out a spurious relation whereby unobserved individual-and community-level factors affect both fear of crime and psychological distress.…”
