The Influence of Cu Addition on Dispersoid Formation and Mechanical Properties of Al-Mn-Mg 3004 Alloy

Abstract: Abstract:The effect of Cu addition on dispersoid precipitation, mechanical properties and creep resistance was investigated in an Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloy. The addition of Cu promoted dispersoid precipitation by increasing the number density and decreasing the size of dispersoids. Metastable β -Mg 2 Si and Q-AlCuMgSi precipitates were observed during the heating process and both could provide favorable nucleation sites for dispersoid precipitation. The addition of Cu improved the thermal stability of dispersoids du… Show more

“…In Cr-free DC0 alloys, the dispersoids could be identified as ¡-Al(Mn, Fe) Si dispersoids based on the shape and composition, which agreed with many previous works. 13,5,8) However, in DC30 alloys, a small amount of Cr element were detected in the dispersoids according to the EDS spectrum results as shown in Fig. 5.…”

“…12) Cu decreased the size of dispersoids and improved dispersoids' thermal stability. 13) The addition of Sc and Zr could greatly increase yield strength at room temperature and creep resistance at elevated temperature by introducing Al 3 (Sc, Zr) into AA3xxx alloys. 14) With the addition of Mo, the size of dispersoids became finer with a higher volume fraction, the area percentage of dispersoid free zones was reduced.…”

“…Liu and Chen optimized the content of Fe and Mn in Al-Mn-Mg for dispersion hardening [9,10]. The effect of Mg, Mo and Cu additions on the precipitation of Mn-rich dispersoids during the heat treatment of as-cast Al-Mn alloys has also been investigated [11][12][13]. A large quantity of uniformly distributed dispersoids are optimum for dispersion hardening.…”
