The influence of different dialysis modalities on the quality of life of patients with end-stage renal disease: A systematic literature review

Abstract: Despite the fact that the results of this study showed no difference in HR-QOL between HD and PD treatment, its review of relevant references can serve as a reference for health professionals. However, patients' conditions must still be taken into account when making suggestions about which dialysis modality a patient should use.

“…In this study, we evaluated the effect of Home HD on HRQOL and health utility scores in comparison with other dialysis modes for patients with ESRD in Hong Kong. Given that the comparisons of Home HD and other dialysis modes were not available in three published systematic reviews and meta‐analyses, our study provided a primary source of evidence to quantify differences in HRQOL and health utility scores among four modes of dialysis. Principal findings of this study demonstrated similar HRQOL and health utility for Home HD with other modes of dialysis.…”

“…When compared with in‐centre HD, Home HD was associated with significant improvement in HRQOL and health utility scores . With respect to the shortage of direct HRQOL comparisons, earlier literature reviews synthesized the health utility scores of patients undergoing different RRT, but indirect comparisons of home nocturnal HD and other dialysis modes were not available. Those reviews considered home HD a part of HD modality for analysis.…”

“…Previous systematic reviews collectively reported the symptom burden experienced by people with CKD (Almutary et al . ) and how dialysis modality influences their HRQoL (Boateng & East ; Ho & Li ). To date, no reviews have examined how symptoms and HRQoL change over time and what relationship exists between symptoms and HRQoL in the CKD trajectory; there is also a paucity of reviews in people not receiving kidney replacement therapy (KRT).…”

“…Increasing utilization of PD in incident ESRD patients will generate increasing counts of PD technique failures per year, unless the rate of technique failure falls more rapidly than the count of incident patients on PD rises. Although PD is associated with similar or better survival and quality of life relative to HD (13)(14)(15), effective strategies are needed to manage the transition from PD to HD in order to avoid induction of collateral risk when PD becomes either clinically ineffective or unviable. Home HD is a potentially effective strategy, because patients are already accustomed to dialysis not only in the home, but also on a daily basis.…”
