ObjectiveTo examine the effect of family and academic satisfaction on the self-esteem and life satisfaction among Peruvian university students.MethodOf the 1,182 Peruvian university students who participated, 364 were male; and 818 were female; and ranged from 17 to 39 years of age (mean = 20.67, SD = 4.4). The family satisfaction scale (FSS), the Escala breve de satisfacción con los estudios (EBSE; Brief Academic Satisfaction Scale in Spanish), Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale (RSES), and the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS) were used to perform the assessments.ResultsThe study model showed an adequate fit (χ2 19.5, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.977, RMSEA = 0.057), confirming the association between family satisfaction and life satisfaction (β = 0.26, p < 0.001) and self-esteem (β = 0.35, p < 0.001), and the correlation between academic satisfaction and self-esteem (β = 0.35, p < 0.001) and life satisfaction (β = 0.23, p < 0.001). The model accounted for 42% of life satisfaction.ConclusionFamily satisfaction and academic satisfaction affect self-esteem and life satisfaction.

Multi-Layer Perception model with Elastic Grey Wolf Optimization to predict student achievement

This study proposes a Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) variant named Elastic Grey Wolf Optimization algorithm (EGWO) with shrinking, resilient surrounding, and weighted candidate mechanisms. Then, the proposed EGWO is used to optimize the weights and biases of Multi-Layer Perception (MLP), and the EGWO-MLP model for predicting student achievement is thus obtained. The training and verification of the EGWO-MLP prediction model are conducted based on the thirty attributes from the University of California (UCI) Machine Learning Repository dataset’s student performance dataset, including family features and personal characteristics. For the Mathematics (Mat.) subject achievement prediction, the EGWO-MLP model outperforms one model’s prediction accuracy, and the standard deviation possesses the stable ability to predict student achievement. And for the Portuguese (Por.) subject, the EGWO-MLP outperforms three models’ Mathematics (Mat.) subject achievement prediction through the training process and takes first place through the testing process. The results show that the EGWO-MLP model has made fewer test errors, indicating that EGWO can effectively feedback weights and biases due to the strong exploration and local stagnation avoidance. And the EGWO-MLP model is feasible for predicting student achievement. The study can provide reference for improving school teaching programs and enhancing teachers’ teaching quality and students’ learning effect.

Background The research indicates that academic skills and family function may influence academic achievement. The Covid 19 epidemic has impacted regular academic and family function. However, there is a dearth of studies evaluating the relevance of academic skills and family function on college students' academic achievement. This research was done to determine the levels and relationships between academic achievement and study skills and family functions. Two hundred seventy-nine college students were assessed with Sociodemographic and academic proforma, Study Skills Assessment Questionnaire (SSAQ), and The McMaster Family Functioning Scale (MFFS). Results Results revealed that the mean score of SSAQ and MFFS were 179.92 and 17.88, respectively. Multiple regression analysis showed that the score of reading skills and the MFFS score statistically significantly predicted the score of the exam. Conclusions On the basis of this study's results, it is possible to conclude that reading skills and family functioning may influence academic success.
