The Influence of Lactobacillus brevis on Ornithine Decarboxylase Activity and Polyamine Profiles in Helicobacter pylori‐Infected Gastric Mucosa

Abstract: Background.  Functional probiotics may prevent Helicobacter pylori infection, and some evidence suggests that they also possess antitumor properties. Lactobacillus brevis (CD2) is a functional Lactobacillus strain with peculiar biochemical features, essentially related to the activity of arginine deiminase. This enzyme catalyzes the catabolism of arginine and affects the biosynthesis of polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine). Polyamines are polycations found in high concentrations in both normal and… Show more

“…Ingestion of L. gasseri strain LG21 did not eradicate H. pylori, but it decreased H. pylori density in gastric mucosa of the H. pylori-positive volunteers (15). Similar results were reported in clinical trials using L. brevis (21) and yogurt containing L. acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis (22). It was reported that triple therapy supplemented with inactivated culture of L. acidophilus (14) or yogurt containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium (19) increased H. pylori eradication rates.…”

“…Lactobacillus brevis strain showed pro-apoptotic effects in Jurkat cells and it was hypothesized that this ability in inducing apoptosis could be associated with polyamine synthesis (68). Besides, a peculiar Lactobacillus brevis strain (CD2 strain) demonstrated anti-proliferative biochemical features, essentially related to the activity of arginine deiminase (69). This enzyme is able to catalyse the catabolism of arginine and to affect the biosynthesis of polyamines (70).…”

“…This is only one of the examples. It can be speculated that the suppression of Helicobacter pylori infection by some LAB (Wang et al, 2004;Cruchet et al, 2003;Linsalata et al, 2004) may have a certain effect on the host OxSrelated indices in blood. However, such approaches are actually only speculations.…”
