The influence of ICT use and related attitudes on students’ math and science performance: multilevel analyses of the last decade’s PISA surveys

Abstract: This study analyzed the latest four PISA surveys, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2018, to explore the association between students’ ICT-related use and math and science performance. Using ICT Engagement Theory as a theoretical framework and a three-level hierarchical linear modeling approach, while controlling for confounding effects, ICT-related independent variables of interest were added to the models at the student, school, and country levels. The series of models revealed that, in general, an increase in ICT avail… Show more

“…In the "Your Friends' Favorite Things" project allows students to explain the outcomes of their mathematical calculations through oral explanation and written description. As a result, the exercise can boost students' motivation to learn mathematics and they have confident in ICT [17]. The findings suggest that learning data handling integrated with ICT develop students' numeracy skill by understanding their survey result.…”

“…The mathematics education community believes that proper ICT integration impacts all aspects of mathematics education. What kind of mathematics should be presented and how mathematics is taught and learned [27]- [30]. Effective use of ICT in mathematics education can lead to more learner-centered classroom practices.…”

“…Although this method is more commonly used in existing studies, considering the bias formed by social expectation effects, the content of respondents' responses is closer to the psychological expectations than the reality (Ren et al, 2022;Wu et al, 2023). previous studies, this study extended the analysis object of ICT use to higher vocational students and found the heterogeneity of the impact of ICT use types on academic achievement and mental health by using large-scale empirical data (Courtney et al, 2022;Zhu & Li, 2022). The results provide effective support for understanding the complex effects of different uses of ICT and integrating controversial views on the use of ICT for educational development.…”
