The influence of ileitis on the neurochemistry of the caudal mesenteric ganglion in the pig

Abstract: The present results suggest that inflammatory processes of the porcine ileum are able to induce changes in the intraganglionic architecture of a sympathetic ganglion located at discrete distance from the affected bowel segment.

“…According to some authors, pyloric sympathetic nerve fibers additionally originate from some of the paravertebral ganglia, such as cranial cervical ganglion as well as cervicothoracic ganglion (Elfvin and Lindh, 1982). Other unanswered question concerns the arrangement of the ''pyloric'' cell bodies within the ganglion complex -some experiments depicted that perikarya are somatotopically organized within the prevertebral ganglia (Kaleczyc et al, 2004;Lindestrom and Ekblad, 2002;Lindh et al, 1986;Macrae et al, 1986;Majewski, 1999;Pidsudko et al, 2001Pidsudko et al, , 2011.…”

“…Functionally, sympathetic nerves are known to inhibit motility Moreover, there is strong evidence that postganglionic sympathetic perikarya, in addition to classic catecholaminergic transmitter (noradrenaline), could contain other biologically active substances, such as: NPY, SOM and GAL (Kaleczyc et al, 2004;Lakomy et al, 1993;Mundinger et al, 1997;Pidsudko et al, 2001Pidsudko et al, , 2011Skobowiat et al, 2010aSkobowiat et al, ,b, 2011. According to some authors these substances could even demonstrate characteristic ''spatial organization'' within the area of prevertebral ganglia (Lindh et al, 1986).…”

“…As a result, they are often used as models to study a variety of disease mechanisms and different pathophysiological conditions in humans, such as obesity and gastrointestinal dysfunctions (Spurlock and Gabler 2008;Pidsudko et al 2011;Zhang et al 2013). Substance P was reported to be localised in the porcine central nervous system (Barnes et al 1993;Holm et al 1993) and in the nerve fibres innervating many porcine organs (Schmidt et al 1991;Happola et al 1993;Czaja et al 2001;Lamb and Sparrow 2002;Podlasz et al 2003;Pidsudko et al 2008;Podlasz and Wasowicz 2008;Kaleczyc et al 2010).…”

“…The physiology and pathophysiology of the CaMG and corresponding plexus is widely discussed in the literature (Melman and Kapskya 1960, Nozdrachev 1968, Kostina 1971, Komissarov and Krivobok 1975, Archakova 1979, Kaleczyc et al 1995, Sann et al 1995, Berthoud and Powley 1996, Elfvin et al 1997, Ribeiro et al 2000a, Ribeiro et al 2000b, Pasichnichenko and Skok 2002, Gagliardo et al 2003, Koval et al 2004, Gagliardo et al 2005, Pidsudko et al 2011. Unfortunately, the lack of detailed descriptions of these structures in domestic mammals, besides some general comments provided by anatomical textbooks (Dyce et al 2002, Nickel et al 2004, Koenig and Liebich 2007, have partly prompted us to undertake anatomical studies regarding the ovine CaMG.…”
