Influences of High School Physical Learning Environments on Students’ Anxiety in China

Background: High school students are at an increased risk of developing generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) due to significant pressure to achieve academic success. Aim: Although it is known that a school’s physical learning environment can influence students’ GAD, there is limited research examining this relationship. To fill this knowledge gap, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 230 students from two high schools in China. Methods: A survey questionnaire captured students’ GAD self-evaluations (dependent variables), perceptions/preferences of their school physical environment (independent variables), and social and personal conditions (confounding variables). Bivariate analysis showed that students’ GAD scores were associated with multiple factors related to the learning environment, physical activities, and personal characteristics. The multivariate analysis examined the relationship between GAD scores and physical learning environment variables while controlling for confounding variables. Results: The results indicated that adequate lighting ( B = −0.154, p = .029) and perceived effectiveness of using self-service cafeterias in reducing anxiety ( B = −0.138, p = .044) were significantly associated with GAD scores. Conclusions: These findings provide evidence for the importance of designing high schools with students’ mental health in mind. Specifically, school administrators and designers should consider how to improve the physical learning environment by incorporating natural light, a self-service cafeteria, and spaces for physical activities to promote students’ mental well-being.

Background: Attention plays a critical role in learning. While multiple behavioral and neuroimaging methods can measure attention, portable EEG provides the opportunity to measure attention in a more naturalistic environment. However, the field is still in its infancy, with varied research aims and methodologies. The current scoping review aims to clarify: (1) the research aims of the studies, (2) the portable EEG collection methodologies, and (3) the EEG measures of attention. Method: The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis - Scoping Review extension (PRISMA-ScR). Two authors extracted data items from 45 eligible studies selected from five databases. Results: Three research aims were identified in previous studies: examining the effects of learning-related factors on attention measured by portable EEG (n = 23), developing attention classification algorithms (n = 7) and software for monitoring and promoting attention (n = 10), and verifying the signal quality of EEG derived from portable EEG in attentional tasks (n = 5). Most studies sampled fewer than 40 college students and recorded EEG no longer than 40 minutes with portable EEG devices developed by Neurosky. The testing sites and tasks were predominantly out-of-lab controlled settings and structured learning materials. EEG measures were selected by theory-based (n = 8) or data-driven approaches (n = 37), with most studies quantifying task-related attention with the spectrum power in multiple EEG bands. Discussion: Portable EEG has been a promising approach to measuring attention in educational settings. Meanwhile, there are challenges and opportunities related to the better translation of cognitive neuroscience research into practice.

Observing peaceful natural environments has been shown to restore cognitive abilities and reduce stress. As a result, visual access to natural environments is becoming increasingly common in educational settings. However, most current research on classroom window views has examined classroom environments in elementary and secondary schools, and only some university classrooms have been used as study sites. This study investigated the relationship between the naturalness of university classroom window views and physiological and emotional responses and standardized tests of attentional focus (learning efficiency) in university students. Thirty participants (undergraduates 21.16 ± 1.01 years old) viewed architectural window views and natural window views for 3 min each, and physiological measures of EEG, HRV index, and psychometric measures of Semantic Differences Questionnaire and Emotional State Questionnaire generated data. Measurements were generated. The results indicated that the natural window view significantly enhanced theta, alpha, and beta waves of brain activity, provided a sense of comfort, relaxation, and pleasure, and increased learning efficiency compared to the architectural window view. The findings support the beneficial associations between window views on university campuses and students’ mood and learning efficiency, emphasizing the importance of considering natural window views in the planning and designing of university classrooms.
