The Influence of Knee Pain Location on Symptoms, Functional Status, and Knee-related Quality of Life in Older Adults With Chronic Knee Pain

Abstract: Objective To evaluate whether knee pain location can influence symptoms, functional status and knee-related quality of life in older adults with chronic knee pain. Methods A total of 2959 painful knees from the Osteoarthritis Initiative database were analyzed. Trained interviewers recorded patient-reported location of knee pain. Painful knees were divided into three groups of patellofemoral only pain, tibiofemoral only pain, and combined pain. Self-reported knee-specific symptoms, functional status and knee-… Show more

“…The incidence of osteoarthritis is increasing with the increasing global ageing population; it is projected that the prevalence of osteoarthritis will increase from approximately 10% of people aged 60 years or older to 40% over the next 20 years . Osteoarthritis is associated with joint pain and stiffness, reduced balance, impeded mobility and loss of functional independence . These factors have all been previously demonstrated to be risk factors for falls in cohorts of older people …”

“…Osteoarthritis is the result of degeneration, thinning and even denudation of cartilage, which leads to pain and limitation of function. 18 Currently, the only effective solution Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery 28 (1) for osteoarthritis is joint replacement surgery. 19 However, it is an expensive and invasive procedure.…”

“…However, the predominant cause of chronic knee pain is cartilage wear and ulceration. 1 This is particularly pronounced over the patellofemoral and medial tibiofemoral joint.…”

“…Patellofemoral (PF) osteoarthritis (OA) is highly prevalent 1 and is associated with substantial pain, reduced function, and lower quality of life. [2][3][4][5] Knee OA often begins at the patellofemoral joint, preceding multicompartment disease. [6][7][8] An international consortium 9 in 2017 posited that knee malalignment (both patellofemoral and tibiofemoral) may increase patellofemoral joint stress, leading to OA.…”
